Bio
Dr. Laura Nykänen is a specialist dentist in prosthodontics and oral physiology, subspecialist in pain medicine, and postdoctoral researcher at the Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases, Helsinki University Central Hospital, where she leads the orofacial pain clinic. She divides her work between clinical duties and research on bruxism, temporomandibular disorders, and orofacial pain.
Her PhD research was on awake bruxism assessment and laid the foundation for a prospective cohort study on causal factors. She has since led and participated in projects on psychosocial traits in awake bruxism, clinical management of temporomandibular disorders, and international studies on bruxism competence. She has received several national and international research grants, acting both as principal investigator and collaborator.
She has teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including oral physiology, oral and maxillofacial diseases, and clinical supervision. She has developed teaching materials for the dental curriculum and supervises PhD candidates in the Doctoral Program in Oral Sciences.
She contributes to the scientific community through peer review, membership in expert panels, participation in dissertation committees, and presentations at international congresses.
